Port Hope, is a quaint and charming small town with the "Best Preserved Main Street in Ontario". If you are interested in Victorian era architecture, this is the place for you as it is chock-a-block full of 19th century buildings and homes. (Try a self-directed walking tour available on the Visit Port Hope website). It also has a dynamic food scene, a top notch theatre and every spring and fall, draws people from around the world to fish the salmon and trout runs on the Ganaraska River which runs right through the downtown. People who come to visit instantly feel the magic of this place, and we know you will too. The Charlie has ample and free on-street parking, right outside the front door. And although a car is nice for seeing some local attractions, it is not necessary to enjoy the beauty of Port Hope. We are an 7 minute walk to the downtown core full of local shops, theatres, restaurants and the best Port Hope has to offer. This charming Victorian-era home is nestled in "English Town" and is a mere minutes walk from historic downtown Port Hope, Ontario. For those who haven't been, Port Hope is a small, magical town with one of the best preserved 19th century main streets in all of Canada. This is where Stephen King's IT was filmed, making cinematic use of the lovely, old brick facades, cramped alleyways and the amazing Capitol Theatre, one of only a few "atmospheric" theatres still in operation today. The house itself, which has been nicknamed, "The Charlie", was built in 1853 by the Marshall family, originally from England, and among the first settlers of Port Hope. It was built in the Gothic Cottage style of this era, and closely resembles 3 other local brick cottages attributed to the Trick family also of Port Hope. Although our house does not, all 3 of those "Trick" cottages now have historical designation. It is built of lovely red clay Ontario brick, with an olive green front door and trim. The interior is 1300 square ft, over 2 floors. Built into the side of a hill, it is a topsy-turvey house, with the kitchen downstairs, and the parlour above. It is also a fully functional home, with a master bedroom and ensuite bath, parlour and games nook, kitchen and dining area, and a snug with a sectional and 50" smart TV. Decorated in a modern-Victorian style, it has an upscale, whimsical, eclectic vibe. Outside is a beautiful English-style garden with a sunshine yellow bench across from a fountain. It is especially spectacular between May and September. Port Hope is a one hour drive from Toronto, but you can also take a train from Union station several times a day, which also takes an hour. There is plentiful free parking on the street. * Shops in downtown historic Port Hope are a mere 7 minute walk * Restaurants are also 7 minutes by foot or a 3 minute drive * The Port Hope Golf and Country Club is 4 minutes by car * Port Hope’s East Beach is 5 minutes by car or a 25 minute walk * Hiking trails surround The Charlie with many trails minutes away *The Port Hope Via Rail train station is a 5 minute cab ride
